Today Is Good Friday

Today is Good Friday - A day that represents the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ... Although Jesus was completely innocent of all sin, Jesus suffered the most horrible, disgraceful punishment known. But His agonizing death was not an ordinary death, for it was not the final chapter. Jesus turned this apparent defeat into the most glorious victory the world has ever known. At the Cross, He suffered for the sins of the world. Then after His resurrection from the dead three days later, Jesus empowered His disciples with a new message, the Good News that He had finally defeated the power of sin and death. Through the Cross, Jesus offers salvation to All who will believe in Him.

Today - I was thinking of when I was a little girl - I can remember my mom singing along to this song... On a hill faraway...

The Offensive Cross

In 1934, a World War I veteran named Riley Bembry helped to erect a cross in the middle of no where... in the middle of the Mojave Desert... This cross sits on a 4,000 foot plateau -You won't find this cross on any maps... No one really knew about it.... it was erected to honor the war veterans.... It was to honor the war veterans who came to the desert to recover from severe lung diseases caused by mustard gas during the attacks in World War I.

Riley and the other war veterans who erected this cross over 75 years ago did not get permission to put up the cross and for several decades - no one cared it was there... Riley was the caretaker for this memorial until 1984 when he died. Today Henry Sandoz along with his wife Wanda proudly are the caretakers of this memorial...

Today this memorial is hidden between plywood... yep you read it right - it's hidden behind plywood... Why, you may ask.. Because the cross is offensive to some.... a very small minority - I ask why does a small minority have such strong powers.... Why does our government turn their back on the very fabric of it's conception.... Why are they so afraid to represent and show respect to Jesus Christ..?

In 1994, 1.6 million acres of desert - including the land where the cross is became government property after it was turned into a National Park.... A few years later, a resident wanted to put up a Buddhist shrine near the cross... the request was denied.... And because the ACLU - is against anything "Christian" related - they said it wasn't fair -they said if the cross is up then every other religious symbol should be able to be displayed... (it's sounds so childish to me) What angers me is that the cross isn't just about religion it's about honor - the cross is honoring the WW I vets - men and women who fought for our freedom... who fought for our country... and the ACLU is always up to the task of mocking our patriotism.. I find that so very sad..

Peter Eliasber, managing attorney of the ACLU in Southern California is quoted as saying, "It strikes me as sort of odd that it just happens to be in that shape. If what they really wanted to do was have a war memorial, there are hundreds of other shapes that it could be in." Okay this is me saying, "huh?" The cross was erected 75 years ago... A time in our country where God, Church, and Patriotism meant something......

So today the Supreme Court is deciding what to do - some members of Congress agreed to transfer one acre of land around the cross in exchange for five private acres around the preserve. A San Francisco, California appeals court turned down that offer, saying it failed to satisfy Constitutional concerns.... If the government allows this cross to be removed - what are the implications of the other religious imagery in our country - it's on building - other memorials.. On statues.. works of art - is our government going to destroy those too?

Jesus And The Criminals On The Cross

The word crucifixion is just a word...to some people... It was to me.. not anymore.. When I think of the crucifixion, I think of the pain and humiliation that Jesus suffered.. Crucifixion, a practice probably adopted from Persia, was consider by the Romans to be the cruelest form of execution. This punishment was reserved for the worst criminals; Roman citizens were not crucified. The victims usually died after two or three days of agonizing suffering enduring thirst, exhaustion, and exposure. The victim's arms were nailed to a beam, which was hoisted up and fixed to a post, to which the feet of the victim would be nailed. The body weight was supported by a peg on which the victim sat....I think 'The Passion of the Christ' helps to give an idea what is was like. I just don't know.. I cannot imagine how awful it was for Jesus.. Many of the people He was sacrificing Himself for mocked him and turned their backs on Him...The pain and the sadness...is just overwhelming..
After Jesus was sentenced to death..after he was beaten beyond what most men cannot endure, He was to carry His cross to Calvary... Because He was too weak and the pain so great, a man named Simon was ordered by a Roman guard to carry it. Simon must have been or later became a Christian; it is unlikely that he would be referred to by name if he were a stranger to the Christian community.
What is must have been like for Jesus to watch the soldiers cast lots of His clothing, listening to the people passing by Him and shouting abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. "So! You can destroy the Temple and build it in three days, can you? Well then, if you are the Son of God, save yourself and come down from the cross!" In His pain, he prayed to His Father and asked God to forgive these people.. Luke 23:24. It is hard to imagine anyone giving others grace when they are experiencing that kind of pain and rejection..
Jesus was being crucified with two criminals. One of the criminals hung there and yelled out insults to Him, "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!".. The other criminal spoke to the criminal and said, "Don't you fear God?" he said, "since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."
That is just an example of Jesus' grace and love he has for us. Whether we are a Pastor or Priest of a church or the worst of criminals... His love is always and forever.

He Has Risen!!! He Has Risen Indeed!!!!
